Justicia pendiente - esterilizaciones forzadas Perú

Since 1995, thousands of women in Peru were surgically sterilized under poor conditions as part of the National Reproductive Health Program during the government of Alberto Fujimori.

A woman was taken to a health post in a village to undergo a simple surgical operation but faced complications, leading to her transfer to the Regional Hospital in Piura and later to a clinic where she passed away due to postoperative infection.

Flora Tamayo, from the Center for Peruvian Women, investigated cases of women coerced into sterilization by offering food in exchange for the procedure. Many women underwent the operation without proper consent, leading to severe consequences.

Legal reports highlighted grave violations, including forced sterilizations treated as negligent injuries by officials. Efforts were made to hold those responsible accountable through legal proceedings for the forced sterilizations.

Efforts by organizations like DEMUS continue to seek justice for victims of forced sterilization, highlighting the need for accountability and prevention of such human rights violations. Cases of forced sterilization are considered heinous crimes that do not have a statute of limitations.
